1-)Alm. Amalgam (n.), Fr. Amalgame (m), İng. Amalgam. Çok kuvvetli çözme özelliğine sahip olan civanın, metaller ile yaptığı karışım (alaşım).

Sıvı civa, birçok metali, özellikle bakır, gümüş, altın ve alkalimetalleri (lityum, sodyum, potasyum, ...) çözer. Amalgam; katı, yumuşak veya sıvı olabilir. Civa, bazı metal olmayan maddeler ile de amalgam verir. Amalgamın sertliği ve yumuşaklığı ilave edilen metalin miktarına bağlıdır.

Amalgamın en belirgin özelliği; içlerinde çözünmüş olan metalin aktifliğinin azalmasıdır. Mesela, su ile çok şiddetli reaksiyon veren sodyum, amalgamda oldukça yavaş reaksiyon verir. Gümüş amalgaması dişçilikte dolgu maddesi olarak kullanılır. Yine kalay amalgaması eskiden ayna yapımında kullanılırdı. Metalurjide, çeşitli metaller amalgam yapılarak ayrılır. Kimyasal reaksiyonlarda amalgam, katalizör olarak kullanılır.

Amalgamların çoğu ısıtılınca civanın buharlaşmasından dolayı bozunur. Fakat bakır amalgaması ısıtılınca yumuşar, soğuyunca tekrar sertleşir.
